12 Things Kids Today Won’t Experience

Things have changed a lot since I was a kid, and I’m only 24. I can’t imagine how people in their 80s feel, but I suppose that’s how it goes. As I look at all of the technology we have today, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. So, in honor of the nostalgia I am feeling today, I present 12 things I miss about the 90s and early 2000s – aka my childhood – that today’s kids will never know.

  1. Polly Pockets – the real ones that were so small you could actually fit an entire village of people into a child sized pocket.
  2. Dunkaroos – if you don’t know what they are, I’m sorry. You can only buy them online now, which seems pretty shady and makes me wonder if people are just selling 10 year old boxes.
  3. Powerhouse Disney Movies – I plan on owning every Disney movie I watched as a child, so my kids don’t grow up thinking the movies of today are the pinnacle.
  4. One Saturday Morning – Those of us who didn’t have cable or satellite (and probably the ones who did) woke up bright and early every Saturday, so we could watch Saturday morning cartoons at 8:00. Television just isn’t what it used to be.
  5. Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, 98 Degrees, O-Town, and all the obscure boy bands that tried to make it…I’m talking to you Dream Street.
  6. MASH – the game played by preteens across the country.
  7. Home Phones – I don’t actually miss home phones, but I do miss the mystery of the time: never knowing who would pick up, never knowing if that person would even be home because texting wasn’t a thing and friends didn’t know your whereabouts 24/7, having to answer if you wanted to know who was calling because you didn’t have caller ID and then trying to gracefully duck out of a conversation when it was someone you didn’t want to talk to, pretending to be a spy and listening in on other people’s phone calls because you had a phone on every floor of the house. It was a beautiful time.
  8. VHS Camcorders – my best friend and I would make home movies all the time when we were kids. They were mostly horror films. We perfected the art of making fake blood. We would spend and entire sleepover writing a plot and filming over an old video she didn’t want anymore if we couldn’t find a blank tape, then we watched the VHS the next morning.
  9. Oregon Trail – I’ve tried as an adult and still can’t beat the game, but it was still one of the best games ever made, and I don’t know why it hasn’t been remade for PS4.
  10. 2008 Internet – Before it was full of garbage and you could search for an answer and find it on the first click.
  11. Old Facebook – I don’t mean the original, I mean the Facebook before the one we have now. The Facebook that people used to share their life and photographs. The Facebook without memes. Now it seems to be a place where people share other people’s lives and other people’s photos. You have to look hard to find personal posts intermingled with random shares.
  12. Non-Smart Phones – Phones that were actually used to make calls. Phones that connected people that were far away rather than distancing people who are right next to each other.
