Jesus, My Champion

I’ve been listening to this song like crazy for a couple weeks now, and it has yet to get old (don’t ask my husband, though, because he disagrees).

The entire song is so good, but this is my favorite line:

Let faith arise
For my champion’s not dead, He is alive!
Oh, and He already knows my every need
Surely He will come and rescue me

When I hear that verse, I think of times when trial by combat was a popular method of determining a person’s guilt or innocence. If the accused couldn’t fight, they could name a champion who would come and fight on their behalf. Regardless of whether the accused was guilty or not, if their champion won the battle – came out alive, they would be released and called innocent.

And that is the image I see.

I was accused, and I knew that I was guilty of sin. There was no way that I could defeat sin and death and make myself right with God, so Jesus came to my rescue. He picked up my sword and swung. He fought on my behalf. He defeated the enemy and the power he had over me, and I am called innocent before God.

Thank you, Jesus.
