My husband is truly one of a kind.
There are things he does that might cause a fight if they happened in someone else’s marriage, but we laugh because we both know that, even though he’s 75% serious, he is 25% just being silly, so it makes it okay.
Last week, for example…I am laughing while I write this just thinking about what he did.
First some background information. Like most humans, my husband dislikes doing things that are necessary when you become an adult (i.e. Organizing things, decluttering, cleaning, etc). He used to do this thing where he would play dead if I said something like, “hey, we should work on organizing the basement a couple hours tonight!” I can’t get mad about it because the way he looks is hilarious, and he is so committed that he sometimes doesn’t move for minutes!
Well, he has since toned it down a bit, but sometimes he goes over overboard.
He had the week off, so I said, “I already know what your answer will be, but I have a proposal for you.”
He was getting our dog ready to go outside and looked up at me and said, “you know, I really don’t like when you say you know what I’m going to say as if to guilt me into saying yes. I wish you’d just say what you want to ask.” Then he went outside with Scout.
What he didn’t realize was that I say, “I know what your answer will be,” because I want him to see how well I know him. My goal isn’t to make him feel guilty – and that’s why communication is important!
When he walked back inside, I did what he asked – I just gave it to him straight – I said, “will you buy groceries today?”
For some people that might not seem like a big deal, but we shop for a month at a time. It takes at least an hour and a half, but sometimes it takes way longer. I’m usually the one who gets the groceries because I have a good system in place. It’s really efficient, and saves a lot of time.
I knew I was asking a lot.
He immediately began stammering and stumbled into the kitchen as if I’d dropped a bombshell on him. He said, “woah-ho-ho-ho-hooooo!! I did not expect that,” as he breathed heavily like the wind had been knocked out of him. He walked into the living room and then back into the kitchen avoiding eye contact the whole time.
I wish I would’ve had it on video! I could not stop laughing!
He walked sideways like a crab, so I couldn’t see his face at all.
I told him I knew what he would want to say. This went on for a couple minutes before he said he would do it. I didn’t expect him to say yes!
He loves me so much 🙂
